When you backup using the Volume Shadow Copy service on Windows Server 2003, an installed anti-virus may cause your computer to hang. The Application event log may contain:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: PlugPlayManager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 257
Date: MM/DD/YYYY
Time: HH:MM:SS
User: N/A
Computer:
Description: Timed out sending notification of target device change to window of "VDS Notification Thread Hidden Window {417F6FAB-6A56-49C6-B9A9-6A795A0C73C1}"

To resolve this problem, check your anti-virus vendor's Web site to see if the problem is resolved in the latest version.
