Micro Focus, a provider of software development and application modernization tools, released Visual COBOL R3, a product that lets COBOL developers extend their applications to various deployment environments, with new support for deploying apps to Microsoft Windows Azure cloud platform as well as Java Virtual Machine (JVM).

Visual COBOL R3 allows developers to work in either Visual Studio 2010 or the Eclipse Integrated Development Environment (IDE). Apps written using Visual COBOL R3 can be deployed to multiple platforms from a single source, without the need for any platform-specific work. Developers can deploy the same code on .NET and the Windows Azure platform. This capability makes apps more portable and makes it easier for developers to manage core applications across multiple platforms.
