Q. I'm trying to mount a Windows Imaging Format (WIM) file with ImageX, but I'm getting an error that the WIM file can't be found. A list of the content on the same path works fine, however. What's wrong?

A. While ImageX is the main executable of Microsoft's image management solution, you need other files to successfully mount a WIM file:

  • wimfltr.inf

  • wimfltr.sys

  • wimgapi.dll

Copy these files from the Windows Automated Installation Kit along with imagex.exe. Right-click wimfltr.inf and select Install. You should now be able to mount WIM files with no error.
