Solve HNV Gateway communication problems

Q. My 2012 R2 HNV Gateway VM is unable to communicate with the Internet as DNS cannot resolve. What can I do?

A. I recently had an issue where my HNV Gateway VM was providing NAT capabilities for VMs in virtual networks so they could communicate with the Internet. However the HNV Gateway VM itself was unable to communicate to the Internet as it was unable to resolve any DNS names even though it could ping the DNS server. The solution was to apply a hotfix which resolves a wildcard port issue. Download and apply the hotfix from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2918813. This resolved the problem in my environment.

Another possible option is to download and apply http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2953218 which resolves another issue.
