Skype Buys Qik in Leap Forward for Mobile Video
Internet-based VoIP provider is making a big bet not only on mobile apps but mobile video with its acquisition and new services

Global VoIP provider Skype is ramping up its focus on video services, including mobile video.
The company says 40% of Skype-to-Skype calls are already video-based. To drive that number even higher, it acquired video recording and sharing service Qik for a rumored $100 million.
After a long wait, Skype recently saw its mobile app finally make it into the iPhone app store and Skype mobile apps are now available for most devices on most carrier networks.

Qik was founded in 2006 in Redwood City, Calif., and has 60 employees. Its Smart Streaming technology works on more than 200 mobile phones using Android, iPhone, Symbian, Blackberry and Windows Mobile software.
Ironically, both Skype and Qik suffered high-profile service disruptions during 2010, with Skype’s coming in late December and Qik’s occurring upon the launch of Sprint’s Evo 4G phone last spring, when downloads of the application far surpassed expectations.
