Patch Tuesday: Windows 7 Gets a New Upgrade Patch

Patch Tuesday happened yesterday. Microsoft delivered 11 security updates and a gaggle of other patches for various products. Catch all the coverage HERE. But, apparently the company wasn't quite done yet.

Today KB2990214 has been updated to version 2.0 and there's very little evidence left behind as to why – except if you start digging into the provided file information.

The article contains an update for Windows 7 users that "enables you to upgrade from Windows 7 to a later version of Windows." This is different from the Windows 10 upgrade nag screen Microsoft rolled out earlier this month, and sifting through the file information shows that it includes some updated Windows Update binaries. So, just based on this information Windows 7 users are getting an upgrade to Windows Update, which is most likely in preparation for the Windows 10 rollout that will happen sometime late this summer.

The update is available from Windows Update now, or you can use the article page to download for a more controlled rollout. The update requires that SP1 Windows 7 is installed first.
