Microsoft Recommends Waiting for Fixed Version of SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 1
The SQL team at Microsoft has offered new information about the forthcoming, fixed version of SP1 for SQL Server 2014, along with an apology.
April 23, 2015
Last week Microsoft delivered what it hoped to be an exciting update for SQL Server 2014 users. The database product's first Service Pack was launched. However, as we've grown accustomed to over the last few years, never trust a first release of anything Microsoft provides – particularly updates and patches.
SP1 was available for download for just 11 hours before Microsoft had to remove it from circulation due to bugs not found during the QA process. During that 11 hours, Microsoft says the service pack was downloaded 270 times, so it's anyone's guess how many installations were actually performed.
Microsoft has provided new information and additional guidance for those who downloaded the botched update and also for those still waiting for a fixed version:
The original release was version 12.0.4050.0, the new release will have a new KB and build number.
If you have already installed the original SP1 release (12.0.4050.0), you are welcome to use it. However, we do want to minimize the number of installs of 12.0.4050.0 for servicing reasons.
When SP1 is rereleased, we will recommend that 12.0.4050.0 be uninstalled prior to applying the new SP1 update. This includes any "Side by Side" instance scenarios.
We are targeting release in a few weeks and will share updates as we go.
The SQL team has also apologize for the snafu and promised to do better in the future.
Thanks to Scott Stonehouse for the tip!
