IDC Details Asia/Pacific Storage Market for Third Quarter 2002

IDC released statistics for disk storage system revenue for the Asia/Pacific region (excluding Japan) for third quarter 2002, in its Asia/Pacific Storage Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker. The revenues show signs of a slight recovery with revenue at $585.5 million, up 6 percent from previous quarters. In the region, Hewlett-Packard (HP) continued leadership of total storage end-user revenue with 28.2 percent of the market, followed by IBM with 23.3 percent and Hitachi Data Systems with 9.6 percent. Strong growth in revenue in India, the People's Republic of China, and Taiwan helped contribute to the growth and offset flat, or in some cases, negative results in other countries in the region. The 12 countries included in the regional tracker are Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the People's Republic of China, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Other statistics in the tracker include external and internal disk storage shipments as well as terabyte capacity shipments. External disk storage shipments (networked storage and external Direct Attached Storage—DAS) increased by 9.2 percent over the previous quarter. Internal disk storage systems saw a decline of 0.6 percent. According to IDC, the numbers reflect a long-term trend in which customers are moving from internal storage to external systems. A decline in dollars per gigabyte helped contribute to a 16.3 percent growth of terabyte capacity shipped in the third quarter over previous quarters.
