HDS Debuts Next-Generation Storage Platform

   Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) has launched a fast new high-end storage platform aimed at leaving EMC, IBM, and Sun Microsystems in the dust. The Hitachi TagmaStore Universal Storage Platform can aggregate up to 32 petabytes of internal and external storage and provides logical partitioning of both internal and external storage and storage-agnostic remote copy. According to HDS, the new platform provides the fastest storage system on the market.
   The company introduced three new models as part of the platform release: the entry-level USP100, the enhanced USP600, and the high-performance USP1100. All three models include 146GB or 300TB disk drives and provide Fibre Channel, Fiber Connectivity (FICON), Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON), and Network Attached Storage (NAS) connectivity. The USP100 supports a maximum internal raw capacity of 77TB with as many as 256 disk drives and 17GBps of cached bandwidth. The USP600 supports a maximum capacity of 154TB with up to 512 disk drives and 34GBps of cached bandwidth. The USP1100 provides up to 332TB of capacity with up to 1152 disk drives and 68GBps of cached bandwidth.
   The systems will be available from HDS, and HP and Sun Microsystems will resell storage systems based on the HDS platform. Last week, HP announced the HP StorageWorks XP12000 and Sun Microsystems announced the Sun StorEdge 9990 based on the TagmaStorage Universal Storage Platform.
