A round of energetic applause was Microsoft’s payment today during the Day 2 Build 2016 keynote. The hearty applause was for finally making rumor and customer request come true through the acquisition of cross-platform toolmaker Xamarin.

Even with the show of popularity, Microsoft today took the acquisition even further, promising that it will be available for free for all Visual Studio developers. This no-cost add-on includes even those using Visual Studio Community edition.

Additionally, Scott Guthrie, Microsoft executive VP for cloud and enterprise, said that Microsoft will contribute the Xamarin core platform to the open source community through the .NET Foundation.
