Wi-Fi is an awesome technology, allowing you to untether and be highly mobile. Wi-Fi is so popular, you can get Internet access most anywhere these days, from Starbucks and McDonald's to libraries to airports to hotels. Even Wal-Mart offers shoppers free Wi-Fi in some places. The wireless network technology has become a staple for a connection hungry public and some establishments lose business if they don’t provide it.

But, even though it’s a quantified standard for mobility, it's just clearly not as fast and stable as a good old-fashioned wired connection. I'm that way. If there's a cable connection available, I'll go for that first.

Samsung has now announced an improvement in Wi-Fi technology that might just eliminate a few of the issues still facing wireless networks. In a press release on Sunday, Samsung has announced that the company has developed a 60GHz Wi-Fi technology. That improves the top Wi-Fi speed available today by a factor of 10. For an example of how this equates to real-world speeds, a 1 gigabyte movie can be transferred between devices in less than three seconds while allowing uncompressed high-definition videos to be streamed in real time.

In addition, to the massive speed bump, the 802.11ad technology also maintains maximum speed by eliminating co-channel interference. If you've worked with Wi-Fi for very long, you know that speeds can vary because the signal is constantly negotiating with other technologies in the near area that are utilizing the same channels. Samsung says that the new technology will maintain its speed no matter how many devices exist on the same network.

Per Samsung, we can expect the new Wi-Fi technology to be available in a wide range of products starting as early as next year.
