Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been expanding high-speed access to its cloud computing service by connecting to some of the Internet's most prominent data center hubs, places like Equinix Ashburn and One Wilshire in Los Angeles. As it continues to extend its Direct Connect service, Amazon is now looking beyond specific data centers and providers, and offering private hookups through Hibernia Atlantic, a fiber provider with a network that spans dozens of major data centers.

The agreement with Hibernia expands access to AWS Direct Connect, allowing customers to establish a private network connection to the Amazon cloud that can reduce network costs and increase throughput. Hibernia Atlantic is best known for its trans-Atlantic connectivity, and also operates but a North American network providing high-speed connectivity in 20 markets ranging from Montreal to Chicago to Atlanta. Companies in these data centers will now have the opportunity to create direct private connections to the AWS cloud.

Amazon launched Direct Connect in August in a major Equinix connectivity hub in Ashburn, Virginia. Until now, Equinix, Telecity and CoreSite have been the only data center providers offering the Direct Connect service.

“We are proud to join the AWS Partner Network and to support its efforts to increase network connectivity options," states Eric Gutshall, President of Wholesale for Hibernia Atlantic. “Through this program, Hibernia can offer its services to those customers accessing the AWS Cloud and provide further network connectivity options on-demand to meet growing requirements for customers’ public and private needs. Any customer with a presence in any of Hibernia's 120 data centers/pops or (near net locations) and not directly in an AWS facility can now utilize Hibernia connectivity to directly connect to AWS."

AWS Direct Connect can often reduce network costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and provide a more consistent network experience than Internet-based connectivity.
