Equinix Connects with Amazon, Providing Direct AWS Access

Data center operator and service provider Equinix has introduced the availability of Amazon Web Services Direct Connect services in its International Business Exchange facilities, providing its customers with direct access into the Amazon cloud.

The service is available first in the Equinix IBX in Ashburn, Va., and will be made available in other locations later this year—including in San Jose, Los Angeles, London, Tokyo and Singapore. Direct Connect allows Equinix customers to order a cross-connect that provides a point-to-point connection into AWS within 24 hours.

The company noted number of new deployment scenarios the service will enable for its customers, including higher throughput, lower latency and faster high-volume data processing. In addition, access to AWS via a private network connection can allow customers to better replicate data from AWS into storage solutions, bolstering business continuity, according to Equinix.

“Equinix customers using AWS Direct Connect will reduce network costs, increase bandwidth throughput and provide a more consistent network experience than Internet-based connections,” said Jonathan Lin, director of corporate development and strategy at Equinix. “This direct connection provides much higher throughput and lower latency than Internet-based connectivity, which allows for better integration with existing applications and infrastructure that is housed in Equinix facilities.”

No additional network management or monitoring is necessary for Equinix customers using the new service, Lin said.
