Q: Is there a free GUI application for updating user photos stored in Active Directory?

A: In a previous FAQ ("Q: How can I add pictures for my users into Active Directory?") I explained how to update the thumbnailPhoto attribute in AD using Windows PowerShell commands. However, there’s a free graphical utility available that can do it as well.

Once the utility is downloaded, just start the utility and pictures can be viewed and changed for the domain users, as shown below in Figure 1.

It even includes an editor to help set and modify the pictures, including reducing the quality of the picture and modifying the dimensions to the recommended 96x96. (See Figure 2 below.)
