Q: I need to restructure my Active Directory forest. Can I change the forest root domain?
A: The Active Directory rename tool was greatly enhanced in Windows Server 2003 and later; however, the forest root domain can't be changed. It can be renamed but not actually replaced with another domain. You can find the full list of domain renaming capabilities and restrictions in the Microsoft TechNet article "What Is Domain Rename?"
