Win98 and WinMe Passwords for Compressed Folders Are Recoverable

Win98 and WinMe both support a Compressed Folders option that allow a password to be defined to help protect a folder. The technology is flawed in that it stores the passwords in a file on the system where they could become available to intruders.

DESCRIPTION

Windows 98 with Plus! 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (Me) both support acompressed folders option that let the OS define a password to help protect afolder. Because the OS stores the passwords in a file on the system whereintruders can access it, the technology is flawed.

VENDOR RESPONSE

Microsoft has issued security bulletin MS01-019to address this vulnerability. Microsoft has also provided patches that you candownload for Windows98 and WindowsMe
