Ultra-Thin Designer Keyboard and Mouse to Release from Microsoft in May

One of the most over-looked areas of Microsoft is its peripheral hardware business. We tend to forget that the company continually releases new accessories constantly. My favorite keyboard and mouse right now is from the Microsoft Wireless Comfort Desktop 5000 package. I've used it for a couple years and when asked recently to supply my preference for new equipment, I requested it again.

Today, Microsoft has announced a new offering called the Microsoft Designer Bluetooth Desktop. Microsoft says it's ultra-thin and modern and the keyboard and mouse combination is intended for the home workspace or office.

Additionally…

With a full-size keyboard with built-in number pad and mouse, it is as beautiful as it is productive. Even with its minimalist design, this keyboard gives you a robust typing experience that comes with chiclet-style, soft touch keys. For those who work and play, media keys are included, so you can easily control music and videos. Finally, with Function Keys and quick access to Search and other features, the Designer Bluetooth Desktop is the envy of any PC or laptop.

At first glance, this is not going to replace my current setup anytime soon. Keyboards and mice are very personal devices. Once you find something you like, you stick with it. However, I am always interested in finding replacements that might work better or be a better fit. I hope to test and review this combo when released.

If you want the Designer Bluetooth Desktop combo, it will be generally available in the US and Latin America in May. Retail price is $99.95. Personally, I'd say that's a pretty steep price, considering my setup is less than $50. I guess if you put the word "designer" on something, it immediately warrants a higher price. The mouse, though, can be purchased separately even sooner, starting on March 19 with a retail price of $29.95.

Both can pre-ordered today:
