Verizon announced a new collaboration with eMeter to develop a cloud-based meter data management solution aimed at the utility industry.

Through the partnership, Verizon will offer eMeter's meter data management software to utilities as a managed service via the cloud. Verizon is positioning the offering as part of its “everything-as-a-service” strategy and an example of the service provider’s focus on delivering smart grid solutions for the utility sector.

According to the companies, the eMeter platform is designed to help utilities create new applications, enhance billing capabilities and react more quickly to customer requests—and, because it is cloud-based, avoid large up-front investment by paying per use.

The announcement comes in the wake of Verizon’s recent acquisition of cloud service provider Terremark for $1.4 billion, another part of the carrier’s developing cloud strategy.
