Google steps up mobile app developer search
More mobile app experts needed to combat Apple; focus on building quality apps, not just cranking out me-toos. But is Google competing with its developer base?

Google is reportedly planning to hire dozens of new software developers to concentrate on creating more mobile apps, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The report cites unnamed sources who say Google is after software engineers, product managers, user-interface experts and others, and that some Google employees already have changed jobs to focus on mobile apps. All of it is reportedly an attempt to match Apple’s dominance in the mobile app market.
The WSJ writes:
“Google also has reason to try to spur quality, not just quantity, since getting hit apps first can drive demand for operating systems and devices. Some of the apps developed by Google's new effort may be available only for Android, the people familiar with the matter said. The adoption of Android also helps ensure that Google's search engine, the principal revenue source for the company, and other Google services are prominent on mobile devices.”
The stepped-up effort by Google is not only a boon for mobile developers seeking work, but also another sign of how strongly mobile factors into every company’s evolution—not to mention the significance of the Google/Apple rivalry.
