Xbox One June 2014 System Update is Rolling Out

And Xbox 360 too

Microsoft on Wednesday said that the June 2014 System Update for Xbox One has begun rolling out globally, bringing a number of new features, most notably external storage support, to the firm's new game and entertainment console. Additionally, a related System Update for Xbox 360 is also now rolling out.

I discussed the June 2014 System Update for Xbox One recently in June 2014 System Update for Xbox One to Feature Storage Improvements, More. This update will include:

External storage support. With this update, you'll be able to connect any USB 3.0-compatible drive with 256 GB or more of storage space to your console and then choose whether to use that drive for new game and app installs.

Real names. Many users have asked Microsoft for a way to identify their friends by their real names since it's hard to keep so many gamertags straight, especially now that you can have 1000 people in your friends list.

Auto sign-in. A big feature request, this one will let you configure one of the accounts on your console to always automatically sign-in when the Xbox One is powered or woken up.

Smart Glass. This mobile app is being updated with a new activity feed in its main hub view, Twitch broadcast notifications, pinned app and game reordering (which reorders those items in My Pins on the console), OneGuide support and a new universal remote feature so you can control your TV and AV equipment from your device.

TV and OneGuide head to more markets. This was previously announced, but Xbox One's TV and OneGuide features will be expanded to Canada, UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.

Additionally, the June 2014 System Update for Xbox One and a related June 2014 System Update for Xbox 360 include changes related to the recent decision to decouple hundreds of apps an experiences from Xbox Live Gold and make them available to everyone on Xbox. This was discussed previously in FINALLY! Microsoft Frees Entertainment Experiences from the Shackles of Xbox Live Gold.

Microsoft also announced that Hulu will begin rolling out a free 3-month trial of Hulu Plus for all Xbox Live Gold members in the United States. Any Xbox Live Gold members who are not already Hulu Plus subscribers can sign up directly from within the Hulu Plus app on Xbox One or Xbox 360 and receive a free 3-month trial of the service.

I'm on the road this week, so I'll need to wait until the weekend to check out these changes.
