Microsoft Provides Major Updates to OneDrive on Web and Android

OneDrive just keeps on getting better

Microsoft today announced several changes to its OneDrive cloud storage service, including updates to the web interface and Android mobile app. The app is available now, and the web-based changes to the service will roll out to customers in the coming days.

"We always prioritize feedback from our customers," Microsoft's Omar Shahine notes in a new post to the OneDrive Blog. "And today, we're announcing a number of exciting updates to both the web and our [Android] mobile app that deliver on some of the top requests we've received."

The web version of OneDrive is getting the following updates:

Bigger photo thumbnails. The size of photo thumbnails is getting increased so they're easier to see.

Videos now displayed in line with photos. If you've got personal videos mixed in with your photos, they will now be displayed in line with the photos in your All Photos view.

Video playback improvements.  Microsoft has improved video playback performance from OneDrive and has added support for more browsers and mobile phones.

Photo album customization. Now, you can choose a single photo in an album to use as a static cover photo. (Otherwise, OneDrive will work as before, and create rotating covers for your photo folders.) To add a static cover photo, view the photo and then click Manage and then Add As Cover.

Publish videos to Facebook. OneDrive on the web can already publish photos to Facebook, but with this latest update it can also publish personal videos.

Add new items to previously shared collections. OneDrive already lets you share individual files in a folder as a collection, but with this update you can now add more items to those collections later on. To do so, navigate to your Shared view, right-click on the collection you wish to modify, and then select Add.

These features will all roll out in the coming days, Microsoft says.

Additionally, Microsoft has released a new version of the OneDrive mobile app for Android. OneDrive for Android 2.5 lets you share files and folders by inviting people, sending a link, or sending files to another app; update your View and Edit sharing preferences; select multiple files to download; move files and folders; and sort files and folders.

OneDrive 2.5 for Android (v.4.0+) is available now from the Google Play Store.
