Update issues on Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book

This fix for the update failure, which I was pointed towards by @onovotny on Twitter, worked perfectly and solved my update issue and even cleared the way for the firmware updates to be installed.

----------

As I mentioned earlier, many users are already reporting issues with these April updates on SP4 and SB over on this thread in the Microsoft Answers Forum for Surface updates.

I have also encountered these update issues on Surface Book when I attempted the updates first thing today.

Everything appeared to download and be ready for installation and so I started the process in Windows Update. Immediately after it began I had a BSOD for iacamera64.sys and that of course prompted a system restart.

As SB started back up there was no firmware update screen like there should be and the system restarted normally. Once I was logged back in I went to Windows Update and was being shown one error for the Intel Control Logic driver.

Windows Update Error

Any other attempts to try and reinstall this update results in the same error.

So I headed into the Device Manager to see if anything was in error and found this:

Windows 10 Device Manager Errors on Surface Book

Based on feedback in the update error thread noted above, I manually checked for updates from within each entry on Device Manager and these devices were restored to the February 2016 version of the drivers. Subsequent checks in Windows Update no show attempts to install the April 2016 versions of the drivers however they all fail:

Windows Update Errors for Three Updates

After multiple attempts to restart, and yes I verified my system is charged above 40% - it was at 72% at the time, the firmware updates are not installing but I am not alone either.

Hopefully Microsoft will address this issue and get things resolved as soon as possible however, for now the Surface Book appears to be working just fine with the mix of drivers from February and April.

I will update this article once a fix is in place for these install failures.

How did your updates go this month?

But, wait...there's probably more so be sure to follow me on Twitter and Google+.
