Today Microsoft announced the next product in their Surface line of devices the Surface 3 and you can read what Rod wrote up about it earlier here on the SuperSite.
While the Surface 3 follows the naming scheme of the Surface 2 it is not a follow on in the Surface 2 product line. This is an entirely new product with better capabilities, hardware and functionality but a few steps below the Surface Pro 3 itself. As Peter Bright described it Surface 3 is Surface Pro 3’s little brother.
Using that familial connection I would call the Surface 2 and Surface 3 third cousins.
